My sister found Holmfirth years ago. So on every return visit from South Africa and France I would visit. Eventually my parents moved back from Africa and settled here, so when I finished working in France I decided to settle down here also.

Situated only 40 minutes drive from Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield, Holmfirth is a perfect commuter town. Sitting in the picturesque Holme Valley the town is within easy distance of reservoirs, walks, fine restaurants and music venue. Holmfirth became well known because of the TV drama Last of the Summer Wine. A series about 3 old men roaming the area and getting into trouble. For a sitcom that has not been aired for years, this TV show still attracts visitors all year round, even though the main protagonists of the series are long gone. There is still a tourist bus that takes guests to the various sites used in the show. Examples being Nora Batties house which has a working tea room, Compo’s café and Bill Owen’s grave.

The Picturedrome has a history all its own. Dating back to 1913 albeit under another name and as a theatre, it has had many guises. Currently a successful music venue, working well for the towns economy. If is a standout feature as you drive into Holmfirth from the south or south east. Apart from all that Holmfirth offers numerous scenic walks, reservoirs, and even a small Alpaca farm. There is an abundance of Cafes Pubs and restaurants, to top off a good day out.
